Attendance
A Message About Attendance During Exams:
"School attendance is mandated by policies set forth by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and New Hanover County Schools. All students are expected to be in attendance each day that school is in session, including exam days. Students who do not attend school on exam days will be marked absent and subject to academic and athletic rules governing attendance, including inability to compete in athletic events. If you have any questions, please reach out to the school's support staff and/or Athletic Director."
Students who need to leave school before 3:00 PM must present one of the following:

a written note from a parent/guardian (will be verified via phone call to parent/guardian)

by e-mail to tamara.williams2@nhcs.net from a parent/guardian (also verified by phone call)

be checked out in person by a parent or authorized person in person with a valid ID
NO CHECK OUTS WILL BE ACCEPTED OVER THE PHONE
Notes and emails from the parent or guardian requesting an early release from school must contain the following information:

Reason the student needs to sign out of school,

Parent’s signature,
-
Time the student needs to sign out
-
Date for early check-out
-
Telephone number where the parent can be contacted
All students must be in attendance at least one hour of class to receive attendance credit; however habitual early checkouts (three or more in the same class) will be addressed by the Attendance Council.
All check-ins and checkouts have to go through the attendance office.
NO CHECKOUTS ARE PERMITTED AFTER 3PM
When a student must miss school, a written excuse signed by a parent or guardian must be turned into the attendance office on the day the students returns.
An absence may be excused for any of the following reasons:
- Personal illness or injury which causes the student to miss school.
- Isolation ordered by the local health officer or by the State Board of Health or isolation or quarantine that is a required state or local control measure.
- Death in the immediate family (immediate family includes but is not limited to, parents, grandparents, siblings)
- Medical or Dental Appointment
- Court or administrative tribunal if student is a party to the action or under subpoena as a witness.
- Observance of an event required or suggested by the religion of the student, student's parent/legal guardian. The school principal may excuse up to 2 of these absences a year, further excuses must be approved by the superintendent or designee.
- With prior approval by the school principal, participation in a valid educational opportunity, such as travel, service as a legislative or Governor's page, cultural exposure or experiences with clear alignment to course content standard, or college tours.
- Pregnancy and related conditions or parenting, when medically necessary.
- Visitation with the student's parent or legal guardian if the student is not identified as at risk of academic failure due to absences and the student's parent or legal guardian is an active duty member of the uniformed services and has been called to duty for, is on leave from, or has immediately returned from deployment to a combat zone or combat support posting.
- Any other reason as approved by the board in a board resolution.
Requests for absence for education opportunity must be submitted in writing to the principal in advance of the opportunity. The request should include the learning objective of the opportunity and how the objective links to coursework or the educational development of the student.
ABSENCE NOTES MUST BE SUBMITTED WITHIN 5 DAYS OF THE STUDENT'S RETURN TO SCHOOL OR THE ABSENCE WILL NOT BE EXCUSED
